Neptune Beach
In its early days, Alameda was a summer recreation haven for folks fleeing the San Francisco fog. Neptune Beach was by far its most famous amusement park and operated from 1917 to 1939 on what’s now Crab Cove. Admission to the park then was a dime, and visitors could picnic, barbecue, rent a cabin, swim and dance. An Olympicsize pool included races and exhibitions featuring notables such as Tarzan star Johnny Weissmuller and fitness guru Jack LaLanne.

Bill Osborne Model Airplane Field
The Bill Osborne Model Airplane Field is located near the golf course on Harbor Bay Island.
Launching Ramps
The City of Alameda maintains two free public boat-launching ramps:
- Encinal Boating Ramp is located off Central Avenue behind Encinal High School and offers a launching ramp, restrooms, and automobile and trailer parking.
- Grand Street Boat Ramp is located at the north end of Grand Street and has a launching ramp, restrooms, fishing pier, and fish cleaning facilities, and automobile and trailer parking.

Alameda’s 18 parks include 16 multipurpose athletic fields (4 with night lighting), 1 soccer field, and 16 tennis courts.
Sports Clubs
Harbor Bay Club offers tennis, swimming and fitness facilities and over 280 fitness classes every month.
Swim Facilities
The City of Alameda runs two swim centers located at Alameda and Encinal High Schools. Public Swimming and Aquatic Classes are available from June through August.
Golf
The Chuck Corica Golf Complex offers 45 holes of golf, a staff of PGA Professionals, pro shop, lighted driving range, teaching academy, two practice putting greens, restaurant, and cocktail lounge.

US Hornet
The USS Hornet, the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier that served in World War II, the Vietnam War and moon missions, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1991, opened as an Alameda museum in 1998 and was designated a State Historic Landmark in 1999. The ship, which measures 229 feet from keel to mast top, carried a crew complement of more than 3,000 and cost about $69 million to build.Recreation
- Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach is recognized by Sunset Magazine as “one of the best spots in the region for windsurfing and kite boarding.” The beautiful 2.5-mile beach is one of the longest in the Bay Area, complete with lawn areas for ball games, picnic grounds, and magnificent views of the San Francisco skyline.
- The second-largest concentration of small boat slips in the State—3,400 slips—offers numerous water and other outdoor recreational opportunities.
- The 45-hole Chuck Corica Municipal Golf Complex (two 18-hole courses and one 9-hole short course), located adjacent to the Harbor Bay Business Park, is one of the most popular in the East Bay.
